Hi Dr. Aoife,

I suffer from Cold Urticaria, I develop hives on my face within a few minutes of being in the cold (even below 15 degrees celsius if it's windy!). I have had this issue since I was about 16 (7 years now) and my family doctor has not been able to do anything for me beside prescribe allergy medicine to relieve hives after they happen. I have been for blood tests but they came up fine and I was told that I would have to live with the condition. From what I understand, this condition can be a result of many underlying conditions. Would you be able to help me? No one has yet helped me explore all options besides "dealing" with it.

Thank you!

Hello Dr. Aoife.
My name is Holly and I'm 16. I`ve never had any problems with acne, i've always had clear smooth skin. At the end of August I noticed these tiny red bumps appearing on the left side of my nose. I thought it was acne and treated it with facial cleansers. I thought it would go away like every other acne bump. It didn't. With time, it spread and got more irritated and even spread to the other side of my nose. In november I got fed up and it was even starting to put me in some sort of depression state because of my appearence, so I went to my family doctor. She believed it was some sort of fungus and perscribed me with an over the counter anti-fungal cream. It only made it worse and dried it out, making it flake. I've also tried a cream for eczema, which also did nothing. Since then I've slowly been cutting out gluten, by having a gluten free breakfast and applying a raw honey mask 3 times a week and moisturizing with virgin coconut oil everyday. That seems to calm down the bumps and redness, but it will flare back up again, if not constantly moisturized or treated, it`s also uncomfortable. It's been 5 months and I'm tired of constantly fighting this without finding something to illiminate it. I was wondering if you might have any suggestion? If so I'd be glad to meet with you. Thank you.

Perfect! You summed it up very well Aoife.
Peter and I have found a huge difference in how we feel after just a month or two of eating and drinking fermented foods. And after 9 months the benefits are even more.
Thanks for writing about it.

Great question Bettina! Actually, the research is very unclear for decaf. More recently, the process of roasting decaffeinated beans has shown the same antioxidant benefits from melanoidins as with regular beans, activating completely different parts of the immune system. It was thought at one time that there was no benefit, but most of the research was on blood lipids (fats) associated with cardiovascular disease and a negative association with coffee. With the recent evidence for other benefits for coffee (antioxidants), there is a change in the perception of decaf. Preliminary research for colon cancer comparing decaf and caffeinated coffee shows benefit for both over tea which had no benefit in prevention. If you're drinking decaf in a paper filter anyway, it stands to reason that you won't have the negative associations of caffeine on blood lipids. Whether you get more antioxidants the more you drink, you most likely do. However, research will determine if that is actually true!

The type of decaffeinated coffee bean however and how it is processed is important. Traditional decafs use chemicals to strip the beans of caffeine, whereas Swiss or natural labelled (using compressed carbon dioxide) methods do not.

Excellent article! I do have a question about decaffeinated coffee. Can you drink more if you drink decaf? By that I mean perhaps 2-3 cups a day? Would the benefits more outweigh the problems if you drank decaf?
